Our Family Table

Last night I ran across Lori's blog, Glass Half Full, where she is hosting , The Family Table. I thought it would be fun to blog about the place my family gathers to enjoy good food. (NO eating in the living room!)

(Of course, this table has also seen a fair amount of homework, crafting, visiting, baking, gift wrapping, clothes folding, boo-boo kissing, scrapbooking and celebrating!)

Dh and I have been married 13 years and have lived in 5 different houses. Most of our furniture has been given to us and is, well, kind of an eclectic mix that we lovingly refer to as, "Early Lutheran Rummage Sale." One of the few pieces of furniture that we've actually purchased is this dinette set.
We bought this set while we were still living in Canada. We were moving back to The States and the chrome-edged doosie of a table (complete with two metal folding chairs) that we were eating at was not going to be moving with us. We bought our dinette set (such a deal) and we didn't even take it out of the box till we set up at our new house. (Declaring it did cause our stuff to be delayed at customs, however.)

I love it when my table is empty except for my favorite crystal bowl filled with seasonal fruit atop a doily of my mom's. Ah, but, the reality is my table is set with kid-friendly place mats and the ever-ready basket of napkins. But I guess that is okay. Pass the milk, guys!

The photo of the kids is priceless!

I've been married to my hubby for almost 12 years and most of our furniture has been given to us. What a blessing!!!

Thanks for participating.

Thanks for visiting. Love the photo of the kids and your dining area looks so cosy. Mine also is in a mess too, especially on the weekends!

I love your table! I am totally feeling you when you said your furniture was eclectic and given to you. I sooo want matching furniture in my LR. It is fun to finally make that big purchase, but not so fun when the kids take their forks and scratch your new table. LOL!

Come on by and check out my Family Table if you'd like!

What a wonderful table.. and Yes my table is used for all those things that you have named also.. the homework one is a biggie, kids come home the table is the 1st place the go to do there homework.

DH and I have been married 13 years come Oct. and I would say 98% of our furniture has been given to us also. Our dinning room table is really old, It was DH's Grandmas table that my Mother in law ate off of when she was a child. The chairs however didn't hold up as well so my mom was at a garage sale and found the 4 tall back chairs but the two arm chairs around my table are the chairs tha came with the table. I also have 2 other arm chairs for it but they have broken spindels so I don't put those around the table.

Thanks for visiting my blog It was fun to read about where your family spend time together.

Love your table!! Why were you living in Canada and whereabouts? Didn't think to put in the french verse to Oh Canada - I should have considering my oldest is in french immersion. Great pic of your kids!

Very cool! I love to see my table all pretty with flowers and a nice tablecloth. Reality is though that the table is a mess the majority of the time and I'm totally ok with that! One of these days we'll replace our dinette set but you can never erase memories made at my ole' non-matching table! I think the best looking table is one with kids all around it!

Thanks for visiting my blog. I love your table, too. Looks like it's held up better than mine. Your guys are precious! I read your post about tattling and thought I'd share something that works for us. I read Matthew 18 to the kids and told them that if they have a problem with someone they must try to work it out first. If not, they must encourage the offender to come together to talk to me. If he/she won't come, they come and say to me, "Mom, [name] and I are having trouble." Then I go to the other child and try to work it out. If I have to step in, that usually means consequences for all parties involved - so now they try to keep me out of it. Sounds complicated, but we rarely get past the first part - it has really encouraged them to try to work it out first.

thanks for your table post. My table serves similar purposes, and I, too, try to not eat in the living room! I have many fond memories of meals shared around the table, so I have tried to instill the same habits in my home.

Thanks for your comments! Made me laugh out loud. Yes, the red chair is reserved for guests. Actually it was a test color gone bad...I decided the red was not the right red, yet I still have yet to paint it the right red.
